IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6 sales reached over 100,000 last year as the brand accelerated its transition to zero-emission electric vehicles. The IONIQ 5 was followed up by the IONIQ 6 electric sedan, which was officially unveiled last July, gaining attention as one of the most aeordynamic and energy efficient EVs on the market and placing among the top two models on ’s 2023 top 10 list with the Lucid Air. ![]() According to a new report from Autocar, the IONIQ 5 has been winning over customers from premium brands.Īlthough the electric SUV is priced above Hyundai’s typicaly range, it’s about in line with the competition, starting at $41,500, and sales have been strong. Hyundai’s progressive approach is paying off. ![]() Hyundai IONIQ 5 electric SUV (source: Hyundai) Hyundai IONIQ 5 is attracting premium buyers The sleek, bold design and functionality is attracting a new group of users that’s surprising even Hyundai’s leaders. However, what truly brings the IONIQ 5 to life is Hyundai’s Electric Globular Modular Platform (E-GMP), the company’s dedicated EV archetecture featuring up to 310 miles range (500 km), 800V ultrafast charging (18 minutes), vehicle-to-load capabilities (V2L), and more. The automaker says the IONIQ 5 was designed and built with a progressive apporoach that started with looking to its past, in particular, its first unique vehicle, the Pony. Hyundai took a “ radical new approach” with its first dedicated electric vehicle, the IONIQ 5. It can display user-requested content or change the interior atmosphere to something relaxing.After the IONIQ 5 made its official debut in 2021, Hyundai didn’t realize it had a gem on its hands that would transform the company’s entire brand image.Īlthough Hyundai was known as a “cheap” car brand early on, the South Korean automaker has transformed itself in the EV era with quality interior and exterior designs, state-of-the-art technology, and a focus on innovation.īy doing so, Hyundai, including the Kia and Genesis brands, grew to become the third largest automaker this past year, surpassing GM, Nissan, and Stellantis in annualy volume in 2022. The concept also boasts a built-in mini refrigerator and compartments to, uh, "refresh passenger's footwear." However, the showpiece is an OLED screen that doubles as a panoramic roof. You can bet that won’t be in the production version. The Ioniq 7 concept also trades a conventional steering wheel for what's described as a "retractable control stick" that sounds weirder than Tesla's yoke-style helm. Then again, details like the doors may not make it onto the production model. A set of huge coach doors that open from the middle out promise an SUV that's super easy to get in and out of-even if parking in tight spots becomes more difficult. Hyundai makes the most of the collaboration by trading traditional rows of seats for flexible configurations that can create a lounge-like experience. The Ioniq 7 concept showcases the immense interior space that's possible when the body of a three-row SUV is combined with a completely flat floor. Hyundai Seven Concept Previews Future EV SUV.At the earliest, we think it'll be a 2024 model. With the brand planning to roll out three new EVs-including the already revealed Ioniq 5-over the next few years, we're not sure when the 7 will be available to the public. While the Ioniq 7 concept still appears to be a long way away from production, we expect Hyundai to use the nameplate on a large all-electric SUV with seating for up to seven or eight. The 2024 Ioniq 7 targets a range of over 300 miles and exceptionally quick charging times. While its enormous coach doors and furniture-like seats are other fantastical features, the idea of a vast interior with flexible configurations is conceivable. However, it teases design language and technology that could eventually become reality. With a futuristic façade that includes unusual lighting elements, shape-shifting wheels, and glass panels on the roof and rear, the 7 concept is just that: a concept. Said to be similar in size to the three-row Hyundai Palisade, the 7 rides on the company's new cross-brand E-GMP platform, which will underpin the Ioniq 5 and many other upcoming Hyundai and Kia EV models. Hyundai considers the 2024 Ioniq 7 concept a living space on wheels, which is exactly what the all-electric SUV looks like. ![]()
